Joe Amenechi (b. 1961, Lagos) is a native of Illah, in the old Midwestern Nigeria (now part of Delta state).
He started his art sojourn gradually and subconsciously. Whilst, he was a student of one of the founders of ‘natural synthesis’ art, Bruce Onobrakpeya at St. Gregory’s college, Obalende, Lagos. Amenechi would later proceed to Yaba College of Technology, Lagos where he majored in painting; he graduated in 1985.
His works are woven around a web of intricate, traditional patterns using metal foil, deep etching and metal relief. His overwhelming motives are to preserve the traditional features of his ancestors.
